Newcastle United were a whisker away from going into the draw for the Carabao Cup semi-final but a mistake by Kieran Trippier brought the dream crashing down.
A misjudged header was all it took to end Newcastle's dream of lifting the Carabao Cup as Trippier made the wrong call when he got on the end of a Chelsea cross in the last minute of stoppage time. All he had to do was let the ball go beyond him or head it in literally any other direction, but the choice he made allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to pounce and tie the game up with seconds to go.
The game ultimately went to penalties and Chelsea were prolific from the spot, unlike Newcastle who missed two of their efforts. First, Kieran Trippier piled onto his own misery with a woeful penalty that was dragged wide before Matt Ritchie saw his spot-kick saved.
It was a nightmare for Trippier and for all the overreaction online, none of it will be as harsh as the beating he'll be giving himself, we're sure.
Eddie Howe immediately signalled his intent to support his vice-captain, naturally, but Trippier also received words of encouragement from the unlikeliest of places.
The man who seized the opportunity offered up to him by Trippier's error, Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukrainian took to Instagram reels to send a message to Tripps after the game.
“Kieran, I just wanna say to you: stay strong. Sometimes s**t happens but I think you are strong footballer, no matter what”.
A very classy touch by Mudryk which has honestly surprised us here at nufc.news and given us a new level of respect for the 22-year-old.
Obviously, it doesn't change anything but classy is classy and it should be highlighted because on days like this, it's far too easy to focus on the negativity.
