Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon laugh off spat claims as Newcastle United duo seen having heated words in Baku
Newcastle United's huge 6-1 win over Qarabag FK in Baku last night was overshadowed in the media by the fact that two Toon players looked to have an on-field falling out.
Kieran Trippier had told Anthony Gordon to give Newcastle's second penalty to somebody else to take after the winger had already secured his hat-trick and scored from the spot.
Unsurprisingly, Gordon, who is the team's nominated penalty taker, wasn't interested in sharing the wealth and wanted to keep his goal-scoring run going.
The penalty was just before half-time, and when the whistle blew for the break, Trippier continued to say his piece to Gordon as they walked off the pitch.
Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier set the record straight right after the game
Even though the pair were clearly over it by the time the second half got underway, the TNT Sports commentary team weren't about to let it go, and neither was any other mainstream publication with that being the dominant storyline of the night. Even though both players spoke about it at full-time and put everything into context.
"Gordy had scored a hat-trick and I think the players are [wondering] why he needs to take a penalty,” said Trippier. “But also, he's our penalty taker so he wants to score goals, as everybody else does.
"Ultimately, he's our penalty taker. Listen, in football, emotions are high on the pitch at times. It is what it is. He scored four goals, he was unbelievable today and now we move on."
Trippier and Gordon have a fun history
Anthony Gordon added his perspective, as both players clearly saw the funny side.
"I understand everyone's opinion because I want everyone to succeed. We're a team, we should be in it together, but I'm an attacker, I'm the penalty taker so I want to score as many goals as I possibly can.
"I understood everyone's opinion and emotions do get high but he's one of my closest teammates. He has been since I joined the club, he's done so much for me so he's alright."
Trippier even joked that they'll put on the boxing gloves in training and sort it out. Trippier's first action when Anthony Gordon signed was to jokingly offer him out for a fight after the two had clashed as opponents in the previous season.
