Keith Downie delivers exciting update on Yoane Wissa as 29-year-old starts training with Newcastle United
Three months after signing on the dotted line as a Newcastle United player after weeks of trying to force through the move, Yoane Wissa is finally getting close to making his debut for the club.
Wissa picked up a bad knee injury on international duty just days after signing for Newcastle, and that injury has kept him out of contention ever since.
Newcastle have got by, thanks in no small part to Nick Woltemade, who has taken to the Premier League like the proverbial duck to water.
However, after spending £55 million on a 29-year-old, Newcastle fans are understandably anxious to see where that money has gone. It won't be long before we do, and with the player not heading to the African Cup Of Nations, we don't have to worry about losing him right after he returns.
Keith Downie has provided a very exciting update on Yoane Wissa
We may not have to wait much longer as Wissa is now training with the first team and took part in an 11v11 game at the weekend, and is set to play in another this week, after which Eddie Howe will make an assessment on whether he's ready for the first team.
Keith Downie has been speaking to someone in the Newcastle camp about Wissa, and if what he says on his latest YouTube video is true, then it's time to get excited.
“I was speaking to one of the Newcastle players last week who said to me he’s been training alongside them for a number of days now,” he said.
“He looks… the word that was given to me was ‘frightening’. He looks absolutely frightening. He looks red hot in training, really sharp, finishing superb.
“The rest of the Newcastle players have been really impressed with what they’ve seen from Yoane Wissa in training.”
Can Newcastle play Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa together?
Yoane Wissa's skill set will change the dynamic of the team. He plays more like a modern-day centre-forward, someone who likes to run off the shoulder of the last man, which is what Newcastle are more used to.
Nick Woltemade likes to come deep and be part of the build-up, which is why many fans and pundits have speculated as to whether the two summer signings will be deployed at the same time.
It would take a massive tactical shift, and and bigger question is, who would miss out to accommodate both forwards? We aren't sure how it would work, but if there's a way, hopefully Eddie Howe will find it.
