Julian Nagelsmann speaks up about Nick Woltemade's international hopes amid poor form for Newcastle United
Nick Woltemade's form at Newcastle United has caused the German international to come under intense scrutiny from every angle.
Fans and pundits have been debating what Woltemade's best role is at the club after Eddie Howe dropped the forward into the midfield.
Saturday's performance against Everton hinted that the problems with Big Nick run far deeper than simply where he's being deployed on the field.
Woltemade managed just 14 touches against the Toffees, none of which were inside the opposition box. It's just not good enough, no matter how you look at it.
Julian Nagelsmann has full faith in Nick Woltemade
With the World Cup coming up this summer, Woltemade will be hoping his place in the German national side is still going to be there, and it sounds as though Julian Nagelsmann is willing to overlook the 24-year-old's club form, having told Kicker that he still has full faith in Woltemade.
“At Stuttgart, he wasn’t even in the Champions League squad during the first half of last season, then he played a good second half of the season with seven goals. That’s not a criticism of Nick. He’s a young player who needs time to develop, as we can now see at Newcastle.”
“That’s why I don’t expect him to score 15 goals at Newcastle [this season]. I told him just last week to stay relaxed. We have faith in him.”
Nick Woltemade could rediscover his form at the World Cup
The feeling is that Nick Woltemade isn't suited for the Premier League, and we guess that time will tell whether he can adapt.
Meanwhile, this summer, we'll see how he performs for Germany at the World Cup, and hopefully, he'll rediscover his form there and bring back some confidence to Newcastle ahead of next season.
If not, then his Newcastle career could end up being quite a short one, unfortunately.
