Journalist shares huge update on Newcastle United's potential January transfer business
Ask any regular Joe Newcastle United fan what they are hoping for in January, and they'd likely say that they'd be hoping for plenty of money to be spent in order to fix whatever is wrong at the club this season.
With just one win on the road in the Premier League this season, Newcastle aren't looking good during this campaign, and the general consensus is that throwing money at the problem in January will help to patch some things up.
There are certainly areas where Newcastle are lacking cover. Lewis Hall and Dan Burn are our only options at left-back and we'd rather not have to resort to Burn playing there again, so more cover for that position would be ideal.
Indeed, right now, there's a lack of options all across the back four due to injuries, but when those players return, we're looking decent. In midfield, we could certainly do with someone to help out Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali because Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey just aren't doing enough.
Don't get too excited about the January window
However, if The Athletic's Chris Waugh is to be believed, we shouldn't get too excited about the prospect of new arrivals, as he is expecting a quiet month.
Writing in his Q&A, he said that the noises coming from the club is that they aren't going to go wild in the New Year.
"The messaging from those inside the club is that Newcastle are unlikely to be particularly busy in January.
"Newcastle will be opportunistic and aim to capitalise should any of their potential summer targets become available sooner, but there is not necessarily an expectation they will."
It looks like it's going to be a long month
Waugh went on to name the same positions as above as ones that could potentially be looked at, but it's all about doing the right deals at the right price at the right time.
That's why we feel Kees Smit is likely out of reach. He's far too in demand, and there's no pressure for AZ Alkmaar to sell in January, especially knowing that there'll be so many bids in the summer.
It looks like it's down to Eddie Howe to get the current crop of players performing as we know they can again. Good luck.
