Journalist says where Marc Guehi is likely to end up this summer as Newcastle United retain interest

Newcastle United wasted a large portion of last year's summer transfer window chasing Crystal Palace around for England defender Marc Guehi.

The saga seemed to rattle on for months, only to end up with a frustrated Newcastle walking away empty-handed after entertaining Palace co-owner Steve Parish's mind games for far longer than they should have.

Reports suggested that the figure Newcastle were willing to pay rose to over £70 million, although Newcastle subsequently rubbished those rumours.

Whatever the actual numbers that were discussed were is irrelevant, as Palace never had any intention of selling, and Newcastle fell for their trap and wasted their entire window.

It's remarkable, then, that Newcastle are still keen to try again this summer, according to some reports. Perhaps it's the fact that Guehi has two goals for Newcastle this season that's made them look his way again.

Newcastle aren't the only club looking at Marc Guehi, with Chelsea confirmed to have an interest too - I mean, of course they do, he breathes.

Guehi's form this season hasn't exactly made Newcastle fans rue the fact that we missed out on him this summer, and we doubt the fact that the club are reportedly still keen on bringing him to Newcastle will get many fans too excited.

Thankfully, journalist Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys what he expects to happen with Marc Guehi this summer, and it could be good news for those Newcastle fans.

“I don’t see Marc Guehi joining Newcastle United, not from my understanding.

“I think he is still more likely to join Chelsea in the summer.

“Newcastle are looking around, and their budget will be influenced by whether or not they are in the Champions League.

“I do expect Newcastle to bring that right-sided defender in. They are doing their due diligence and work on targets as we speak. We will see what Paul Mitchell comes up with.

“They are looking at quite a few options, from my understanding. I still think someone like Ousmane Diomande at Sporting will be high up on their list. It’s not a new name. Newcastle have looked at him before and he ticks a lot of boxes.”
