Newcastle United would be wise to offload Callum Wilson in January if any bids come in for the striker.

The 32-year-old has finally made a return to fitness after being absent since pre-season, and he is now building up his match sharpness making appearances off the bench for Newcastle.

However, as good as it is to have Wilson back in the match-day squad, the fact that he's been injured for so much of the season already and has barely been missed, suggests it could be time to cash in on the former England man while we can.

Wilson's contract is due to expire in the summer allowing him to leave the club on a free transfer, which would be less than ideal while the club is trying to raise funds to combat PSR restrictions.

West Ham and Leicester City are both looking at Callum Wilson

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has been speaking on the NUFC Matters podcast and he believes there are two Premier League clubs contemplating a January move for Wilson.

“Even though it may seem a bit strange, there will be interest in the Premier League from one or two struggling clubs.

“I do know that West Ham and Leicester have discussed Callum Wilson. I think West Ham’s up in the air because of the future of Julen Lopetegui and they have already brought one slightly older striker in Niclas Fullkrug.”

West Ham could do with another striker after Michail Antonio's horror crash

West Ham aren't likely to see Michail Antonio in action again this season after his horrendous crash at the weekend which resulted in the Jamaican striker having surgery, so a move for Wilson could be on the cards for them to see them through.

Newcastle will probably have an unrealistic value attached to Wilson so a move won't be straightforward, but if there's any hope of receiving some money for him before he goes for free, we should absolutely consider it, despite Eddie Howe hinting at another contract extension.

We may not be able to replace Wilson in January, but we've managed so far without having him available. We just need to start trusting Will Osula more.
