Newcastle United are yet to finalise their January transfer plans it seems. While we are all hyper aware of which positions need strengthening, the exact list of personnel the club will pursue is yet to be rubber stamped.

That is according to The Athletic's Chris Waugh who was asked about Newcastle's interest in Bryan Mbeumo in his weekly Q&A.

Reports have recently placed Brentford's versatile forward, Mbeumo as Newcastle's 'priority' target in January.

It makes sense as Newcastle desperately need a right winger, and one with Premier League experience who is in the form of his life seems like a no-brainer.

Bryan Mbeumo move could be a stretch for Newcastle in January

However, Waugh has warned against getting too carried away just yet saying that as far as he's aware, the club have yet to decide definitively who they will go after in January.

The winter transfer window is notoriously difficult to operate in with clubs reluctant to sell players mid-season, especially if, like Bryan Mbeumo, they are in such good form.

That's why Chris Waugh has said that Newcastle landing Mbeumo in January may be a bit of a stretch.

Newcastle will finalise their January transfer plans this month

Reports have suggested that Brentford could be willing to deal at £50 million for the Cameroon international, but as he continues to play well that price could increase.

There will also be other clubs circling who could provide strong competition for Newcastle. There's also the fact that at 25 he's seen as being older than what Paul Mitchell would prefer to sign. So there are plenty of reasons that the move may not happen.

Chris Waugh believes that Newcastle's transfer target list will be finalised later this month and we should hopefully know more then.
