Journalist now says Brentford are refusing to sell Yoane Wissa after Newcastle United increase bid
Newcastle United's hopes of signing Yoane Wissa this summer have taken a significant hit as Brentford 'close the door' on a move.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has posted on X that Newcastle had made an improved offer for Yoane Wissa of over £30 million, but Brentford have rejected the approach.
Brentford had made it clear this summer that after losing Thomas Frank to Tottenham and Christian Norgaard to Arsenal, they would only be willing to lose one of Bryan Mbeumo or Yoane Wissa, with both players in demand.
Manchester United sealed the move for Bryan Mbeumo and now it seems that Brentford are sticking to their guns.
Yoane Wissa is refusing to play for Brentford again
However, things are expected to get quite awkward for Brentford as Yoane Wissa is said to have downed tools to force a move.
Jacobs hinted at this in his post, but since then, the Daily Mail has said that Wissa has told Brentford he will not play for them again after being told last year he'd be allowed to leave this summer. While Jacobs has gone on to say that Brentford will deal if Newcastle fork out £50 million, which is not going to happen, let's be honest.
The Mail also expressly mentions Newcastle as Wissa's preferred destination, albeit in a WhatsApp post from the Daily Mail's Newcastle community.
"🐝 Yoane Wissa has told Brentford he will not play for them again & asks club to honour promise from last year he could leave this summer. Wissa wants Newcastle. I'm told deal not over, yet. Those involved still pushing but NUFC looking elsewhere."
This all looks rather familiar
This all feels quite familiar, doesn't it? So we do sympathise with Brentford here, but there's no room for sentiment here.
Newcastle need a new striker, potentially two. And Yoane Wissa would be a solid addition for that backup striker role.
Why is nothing going to plan this summer? When will it end?
