Newcastle United's commercial team led by Peter Silverstone had bagged some impressive deals in recent years, namely the deals with Sela, Noon and Adidas.
However, Newcastle are now over three years into the PIF-backed project and the clubs still does not have a training ground or training kit sponsor, and while the move was highly controversial when Mike Ashley tried it, there's no stadium sponsor either.
Fans are a bit more receptive to a stadium sponsor these days with PSR throttling the club's ability to spend, we're all hyper-aware that every penny counts. Also, Mike Ashley made his move to promote his Sports Direct business without paying into the club which was the bigger issue.
As things stand, though, Newcastle appear to be leaving a lot of money on the table and at a time where they are using PSR as a shield to not spend money on transfers. It's only natural that fans are questioning what's going on.
Shields Gazette journalist Dominic Scurr answers a few fan questions in a recent article and one of those was "Where are the sponsorships?" which is something we've all no-doubt been wondering. Scurr gave an update, but it doesn't sound like anything is imminent.
“Newcastle have secured several major sponsorship deals in recent seasons. The deals with Sela, Noon and Adidas are the biggest respective commercial partnerships in the club’s history. A partnership with Saudia and other PIF-linked companies have also materialised in recent seasons but it still feels like a largely untapped market for the club, who are under financial pressure from PSR to raise commercial revenue significantly.
“A decision will be made regarding the future of St James’ Park in 2025, which will likely include stadium naming rights. A training ground sponsor has also been discussed but no deals are forthcoming as things stand.”
Surely the club can whip up a couple of deals to keep the seats warm for when the new training ground and stadium plans are announced. Even then, it's going to be a couple of years before they are ready, so why not get sponsors in for the current infrastructure?
Obviously, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, there could be perfectly good reasons why we haven't got sponsors in for these things so far, but, again, with PSR being such an issue, it's literally leaving money on the table.
Fingers crossed we will hear something positive soon.
