Newcastle United fans were understandably upset after watching their side fall to yet another defeat on the road last night.

Manchester United played a load of kids in an untested formation, and Newcastle still couldn't take advantage despite seeing so much of the ball.

Whatever the problem is with Newcastle on the road, it is now deeply rooted, and we just can't see us picking up points on the road.

I'm not one to call for the head of a manager on a whim, and I'm still not there with Eddie Howe, but after every result like last night, I sympathise more with those who are calling for change.

Luke Edwards must have fancied a fight last night

Understandably, many fans took to social media at full time last night to vent their frustrations, and the last thing they needed was someone poking the bear like Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards did with his post calling out fans for venting their spleen online.

"I’m very glad Eddie Howe ignores social media and so do the rest of the Newcastle United hierarchy. Imagine the carnage if the hot takes and knee-jerk reactions on here after every disappointment-shaped decision-making 🫣🥴🙄#nufc"

Granted, we have fans who take things too far, and social media is, for the most part, an absolute toilet, but this kind of post isn't going to help anyone. Especially when it comes from someone who only covers our beloved club and doesn't necessarily have the same deep connection to it as the fans do.

Is it really all as bad as it feels right now?

Many fans pointed out to Edwards that it's hardly a 'knee-jerk' reaction when we're practically halfway through the season, which is a valid point.

However, to give the other side of the argument, as we have said many times before, Eddie Howe has weathered storms like this before and still found some form of success. We are down, but we're not out.

Indeed, we're still on for the Carabao Cup, we're likely to get through to the knock-out phase of the Champions League, or at least the play-off, and we're still in the FA Cup. We have a shot at silverware even if our league form is suffering.

In fact, in our recent poll, 75% of you said you'd be happy with a bottom-half finish this season if we won a cup. There are still reasons to be positive, as hard as that may feel right now.
