Since it was announced on Saturday that Ross Wilson had joined Newcastle United as sporting director, there has been a lot of focus on player contacts.

We've looked at three huge players whose contracts aren't close to expiration but still need addressing. Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali and Sven Botman are all in line for improved terms based on their performances and standing at the club.

Away from those three, there are plenty of players entering the final throes of their current deals, and while not all will be offered new terms, most can probably rest assured that a new offer is likely to come their way.

Newcastle's transfer policy is to recruit younger players for the future, but holding on to veterans already at the club makes sense too.

Fabian Schar could be set to sign another contract at Newcastle

Fabian Schar is likely to be offered a 12-month extension

Fabian Schar may find himself slipping down the pecking order thanks to the performances of Malick Thiaw paired up with Sven Botman, but Eddie Howe is a huge fan of the veteran Swiss defender, as indeed are the Newcastle fans. Schar's contract is up at the end of the season, but with Eddie Howe being an admirer and Schar himself saying he'd like to see out his career on Tyneside, it's not really a shock that Graeme Bailey has told TBR Football that a contract extension is likely incoming.

“Newcastle boss Eddie Howe holds Fabian Schar in huge regard.

“He has been an outstanding servant for him, likewise Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope. None are going to get lengthy extensions, but 12-month deals should not be discounted.

“With Newcastle and PSR problems, you can have twenty £50m players, but even if you can afford it, you are not allowed.

“So keeping players such as Schar, Trippier and Pope, who are international players with huge experience… Howe knows just how important these players are.

“This is an area we can expect Newcastle to assess in the New Year.”

Fabian Schar is still an important squad player

Fabian Schar is almost on a 12-month rolling contract at Newcastle these days, with one-year extensions seemingly being the way forward.

Whatever keeps him at Newcastle is fine by us. He's clearly still got what it takes to perform at this level, and as long as that remains the case, why let him leave?
