Newcastle United made it look easy as they beat Jose Mourinho's Benfica last night at St James' Park.

TNT Sports were kind enough to show brief moments of the game last night in between their live coverage of Jose Mourinho, whose record at St. James' Park continues to bedevil him.

The Benfica boss had been waxing lyrical about Newcastle in the run-up to the game, but we're not sure he'll have left St James' Park feeling as happy as he looked when he arrived.

However, the Portuguese manager was still complimentary after the game, specifically about Anthony Gordon, who had a fantastic game for the Magpies.

Anthony Gordon was at his best last night

Jose Mourinho hailed Anthony Gordon as the best player on the pitch

Speaking to the media after the game (via The Metro), Jose hailed Gordon as 'tremendous' after the England winger put in a world-class performance.

"We conceded three goals from transitions,

"The first. I wouldn’t call it a transition, but it was a quick attack in which [Amar] Dedic lost to the best player on the pitch, who had a tremendous game, Anthony Gordon, on the diagonal.

"The second goal was a transition, the third goal another transition. In that period, we struggled. They’re a team with fantastic physicality, quality, and rhythm."

We need more of this Anthony Gordon

This was Anthony Gordon from two seasons ago, when he looked like a world-beater. Last season, he was a shadow of that player, and so far this season, we've had a mix of the two.

Hopefully, this is the start of him being consistently back to his best because when he plays like he did last night, there aren't many better out there.

Fulham come to St James' Park on Saturday, and if Marco Silva was watching last night, then he's got to be very nervous.
