Jonjo Shelvey was sold by Newcastle United in the January transfer window in 2023 after his form had taken a dip.

Nottingham Forest stepped in and signed up the former England midfielder whose contract was due to expire that summer and was unlikely to be renewed.

Before heading to The City Ground, Shelvey had only made three appearances for the Magpies that season after falling down the pecking order.

However, despite his lack of game time, Shelvey didn't want to leave Newcastle as he and his family were very settled in the area.

Jonjo Shelvey aims dig at Dan Ashworth when discussing his Newcastle United exit

Speaking on the Under The Cosh podcast, Jonjo Shelvey has revealed how his exit played out after asking Eddie Howe if he could stay.

"I went in to see Eddie and said Forest has offered me a two-and-a-half-year deal on the same money as I'm on at Newcastle, and he said 'I can't give you assurances that we can offer you the same'.

"I said, 'I don't want what they're offering me. I just want to stay, be in the building, stay in the area, my family is settled here, I just want another year'.

"He said, 'You'll have to go and see Dan Ashworth, I can't make that call; it's down to Dan Ashworth.'

"So I went to see Dan Ashworth, and he said 'no'. So I was like 'See ya later. Ya little midget'."

It was probably the right call by Dan Ashworth ... but still, we are Team Shelvey

Whether or not there would have been any real benefit to keeping Jonjo Shelvey at that point is up for debate. In our view, it was probably the right time to let him go.

However, that little dig at the end of that clip just elevated Shelvey to a new level in our eyes.

All hail Lord Jonjo of Shelvey!
