Newcastle United fans like to think of themselves as the best fans in the world (as does every other fanbase), and honestly, we're definitely up there. You get that sense whenever you listen to commentators soaking up the atmosphere at St James' Park when the Toon Army are in full voice.

As with any large group of people, though, you get the ones who don't tend to represent the views of the majority, but somehow seem to be the loudest ones who garner the most attention.

Social media is a toilet that has given those people a voice to spout their nonsense into the void, and because humans thrive on negativity, it's their rantings that get amplified.

It may seem harmless, or a bit of banter when you post it, but when it gains traction, it gets noticed, and if you think the players don't see it, you're absolutely wrong.

Lewis Miley got some very unfair criticism at the weekend

Joelinton has leapt to the defence of Lewis Miley after unfair criticism

Case in point is Lewis Miley, who came in for a lot of criticism on Sunday for his performance against Bournemouth when he was far from the only player who didn't play to their normal standard. That criticism seemed to carry over to last night when Miley had a superb game overall, but was dragged for a couple of errors he made, rather than being celebrated for the 107 other accurate passes he made.

One man who knows all about having to win over the Newcastle fanbase is Joelinton, who got relentless stick when he first arrived at the club but is now everybody's favourite player. He told the BBC that he felt really bad for Miley at the weekend.

"It's always difficult when you see your team-mate get stick. I have had a difficult time here, too. I know how it is.

"I know the fans are behind the team and a really good young player. He played really well on Sunday. The team has to get better and everyone has to look on the mirror and get better."

Take time to think before posting on social media - the players see it!

We aren't trying to be all holier than thou; we've been guilty of being openly critical of players on this very site.

It never hurts, though, to just take a step back and reassess whether it was worth it. Ideally, doing it before you hit send.

There have been times I've written entire articles and then deleted them before posting because it was clearly an overreaction done in the heat of the moment. It's worth taking the time to calm down, or even type out the rage to get it out, but just don't post it.

When we're all pulling together, the team will do a lot better, especially when they're not logging onto social media and reading fat Barry from Byker, who couldn't run five yards without keeling over, trying to tell a professional footballer how to do their job.
