Newcastle United were miles off the pace against Aston Villa on Saturday, and you could say that nobody in white and green had anything approaching what would be deemed a 'good game'.

As far as nightmare performances go, though, you'd not have to look much further than Swiss international Fabian Schar who really struggled in the game despite netting Newcastle's goal.

The 33-year-old was unfortunate to divert Ollie Watkins' early effort into the net in the first minute before being very fortunate to get away with just a yellow card after bringing down the Villa forward as the last man on 14 minutes.

The redemption arc looked to be on as Schar headed through the legs of Emi Martinez for the equaliser, but he was once again involved in gifting a goal to Aston Villa after a poor clearance went straight to an opposition player, setting up a flowing move that resulted in the goal of the game by Amadou Onana.

Schar had recently been hailed as 'outstanding' for his passing ability, which makes that poor clearance all the more annoying.

Jason Tindall is hopeful that they got to Fabian Schar's injury early

To make matters worse for Schar, though, he was withdrawn in the second half after picking up a hamstring injury.

Jason Tindall confirmed to the media after the game (via The Chronicle) that Schar was hooked to avoid worsening the injury.

"Fabi was feeling his hamstring in the game, so he felt it was the wise move to bring him off and to try and protect him, to make sure that hopefully he's okay for the remaining games."

Sven Botman is nearing a return to action but we'd rather avoid rushing him back

Hopefully, they caught it early, and he can recover during the week, as Newcastle aren't exactly blessed with numbers in defence right now.

Sven Botman is nearing a return, but ideally, we'd like to avoid throwing him straight back into a game from the start. It didn't work out so well last time.

We have Emil Krafth, who can come in and do a job, but that leaves us with a very weak bench. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious for Schar.
