Not even Arsenal in second place are guaranteed a spot in next season's Champions League, while Newcastle United inched a step closer by beating fellow contenders Chelsea at St James' Park on Sunday.
A place in next season's Champions League is all that's left to fight for now, with the title and relegation places long since sewn up, and with six teams fighting over four places and only six points between second and seventh, it's quite the grandstand finish to the season.
Newcastle face Arsenal on Sunday, and a win for the Magpies will send them above the Gunners and send the Magpies into the Champions League, while a win for Mikel Arteta's men will book their spot in Europe's elite competition.
Below Newcastle and Arsenal, though, it's still anyone's guess as to who will make it to the promised land.
Jamie Carragher has made his prediction for who will miss out after the latest round of fixtures on Sky Sports (h/t The Mag)yesterday, and it's not good news for our most recent victims.
“Chelsea will beat Man United [on Friday].
“It is whether they can beat Nottingham Forest away [on the final day of the season].
“There will be a big atmosphere there [at the City Ground on the last day of the season].
"Maybe even if they can’t get Champions League football, I think Nottingham Forest, last game of the season, the supporters will be desperate to say, almost like a big thank you, for the season that they’ve had.
‘"Forest have got European football, great achievement.
“I actually think it will be Chelsea and Nottingham Forest who miss out and Aston Villa get in.”
Chelsea did enter the race pretty late, but at one point, they looked like the in-form side who could pose the biggest threat.
Poor Nottingham Forest have buckled like a Pilgrim's hat, but that probably doesn't give Evangelos Marinakis the right to confront Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch like he did.
Carragher is backing Aston Villa to sneak into the Champions League places, and I can already feel the fear from our very own Mark at the prospect of that, such is his, frankly, scary dislike of Aston Villa.
