Newcastle United already know that they will face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 after seeing off Qarabag in the play-off.

The Magpies strolled into the draw for the last 16 with a 9-3 aggregate win over Azerbajani side Qarabag over the two-legged fixture.

While there were times that the performance didn't match the scoreline, it was about as routine a win as you're ever likely to see in the Champions League.

The way the draw works for the competition, Newcastle already know they will face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round, and will find out on Friday which side it will be.

The Premier League sides have dominated in the Champions League

Every Premier League side that entered the competition this season is in the last 16, with the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham reserving their best form for the competition.

It's with that in mind that the Magpies are slightly bullish about their chances. The aim was to get to the knock-out stages, and now that has been achieved, anything else is a bonus in theory, but there's a belief around Tyneside that there's still more to come.

Indeed, when Jacob Murphy was asked who he's hoping to get in the draw on Friday, his one-word response spoke volumes - "Anyone".

Could Newcastle be the Champions League surprise package?

There's been a lot of buzz in the media today on talkSPORT, Sky Sports and even football YouTubers talking up Newcastle's chances.

We don't want to get too carried away, but our form in the Champions League has been excellent. We had the slip-up against Marseille and were unlucky against Barcelona and PSG, but we've not looked like underdogs at any point.

It's worth bearing in mind too that this is a heavily battle-scarred Newcastle side both in terms of injuries and confidence, so what we've done this season is pretty spectacular.
