'I've got more to do': Anthony Gordon is not resting on his laurels after England goal
Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon sent England on their way to next year's World Cup in North America on Tuesday night, opening the scoring in a 5-0 rout against Latvia in Riga.
Gordon scored the type of goal Newcastle fans are all too familiar with, watching him pick up the ball on the left flank and bring it inside to fire a curling effort in the far corner.
It was a reward for all of England's domination, which had been spearheaded by Gordon for the most part.
Speaking after the game, Anthony Gordon wasn't getting carried away, however, as he knows booking a spot on that plane next year isn't guaranteed.
Anthony Gordon knows he has to keep performing to keep his place
There's plenty of competition for Gordon's position, but the Newcastle star believes his last few performances will stand him in good stead, as long as he builds on them, as he told reporters last night.
"I think definitely the last three performances have been my best for England. They've got progressively better. But yet again, I can't rest on that. I still feel I can do more. I still feel like I could have scored two goals and got an assist or two. So if I want to be really top, top, elite, world-level winger, I've got more to do.
"I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not scared of competition at all. I don't mind it. It pushes me to be better. It pushes us all to be better. So it's definitely not something I'm scared of, but more something I cherish."
Gordon's England mission can only be good news for Newcastle
Gordon knows he will have to keep performing at club level to keep himself in Thomas Tuchel's thoughts, and that can only be good news for Newcastle.
We've been seeing a steady return to form from Gordon this season after a less-than-stellar campaign last time around.
Hopefully, this incentive will get our £45 million man back to his best for his club before leading England to World Cup glory next summer.
