'It's just the start': Malick Thiaw fires warning to the Premier League after Newcastle United's slow start
Newcastle United fans will definitely feel the Magpies should have more points on the board at this early stage of the season, especially in light of some of the performances.
Eddie Howe's side have just one win to their name so far, along with three 0-0 draws and a defeat to the Champions, not to mention a narrow defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.
The general consensus on Newcastle's season so far has been that if they'd had a striker in these games, they'd have won. That argument falls apart after the Bournemouth game, but to give Nick Woltemade the benefit of the doubt, he was playing up top, alone in a 5-4-1 formation.
There are plenty of positive signs, though, and we know that Eddie will soon get the team firing and the wins will start rolling in.
Malick Thiaw is encouraged by the way Newcastle have played
New signing Malick Thiaw has already seen enough to believe that there's plenty more to come from his side as he continues to adapt to life in the Premier League. The German spoke to The Chronicle and said how we shouldn't be getting too downhearted at this early stage.
"Our mentality is we should win every game, but we should not be sad.
"We had quite a good performance at Bournemouth, but we always have to aim to be the best.
"We can also win games like Bournemouth, but it is the small details.
"I think we will improve a lot in the future because it is just the start."
Malick Thiaw has a good chance to make his preferred spot is own
Our early impressions of Malick Thiaw are overwhelmingly positive. He looked fantastic against Barcelona and then followed that up with a solid display against Bournemouth.
It was unfortunate that his afternoon got cut short after he narrowly escaped a second yellow card on the day, following a blatant handball and then a, shall we say, strong challenge moments later.
Early signs are that £35 million was a bargain. With Fabian Schar out for another couple of games, Thiaw will get his chance to impress Eddie Howe and stake his claim to that starting spot.
