Anthony Gordon had to withdraw from the latest England squad after aggravating a hip injury during Newcastle United's 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

It was our view at the time that Gordon shouldn't have been on the pitch to begin with after coming off at half-time during the game against West Ham, complaining of a hip injury then.

As a result, Gordon missed Newcastle's 3-1 defeat at Brentford and ultimately had to pull out of the England squad.

We can't help but feel that if he hadn't been risked against Athletic Club, he'd probably have been fine for Brentford and England, but we'll never know for sure.

Anthony Gordon is 50/50 to face Man City

Anthony Gordon may not be fit to face Manchester City on Saturday

Newcastle have a massive Premier League game against Manchester City coming up on Saturday, and that's the type of game that Anthony Gordon excels in.

However, The Chronicle rates his chances at 50/50 whether he'll be fit enough to feature on Saturday.

Newcastle will likely welcome Lewis Hall back to the starting lineup as Dan Burn serves a one-match suspension after his red card against Brentford, and having Hall and Gordon linking up down the left flank would have given us a fighting chance to turn around our season.

We do miss having Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon marauding down the left flank

Gordon was arguably at his best last season when Lewis Hall was behind him, and with Dan Burn this season, that flowing attack down the left simply hasn't been there.

Harvey Barnes is a more than adequate replacement, however, especially given Gordon's lack of form this season, but a fully firing Gordon is light years ahead of Barnes.

There's still plenty of time for Gordon's odds to increase, but will it be a case of Eddie Howe rushing him back and exacerbating the issue once again?
