Surely every footballer's dream is to represent their country at international level even those playing Sunday League with raging hangovers have that dream, but for some that dream can look really close without ever becoming a reality and Newcastle United have had their fair share of players who fit that description.

There have been calls in the past for Jamaal Lascelles to receive a call up to the England squad and now, another defender has had to admit to himself that his dream of playing for England is over.

At 32 years old, Dan Burn is still going strong at Newcastle and has been, along with Nick Pope, Newcastle's only real beacon of consistency so far this season.

However, the former Brighton man is under no illusions that new England boss Thomas Tuchel will be giving him a call in the future as he told The Northern Echo.

Dan Burn is aware his England chances are gone

There aren't many footballers as down to earth as Dan Burn and it's that grounded calmness that makes him so influential at Newcastle United along with his love of the club and connection to the fans. He knows exactly what is expected of the team by the fans as he is one himself.

But he's also aware that he's not getting any younger and that, no matter how well he plays for Newcastle, he's not going to get the call from Tuchel.

"I'm think I'm done with that to be fair.

"You never know but I think there is a pathway with England now where they are bringing through younger players.

"I think that’s one of those things that’s probably gotten away from us. I’d have loved to have done that but I’m happy with the career that I’ve had."

Dan Burn can play left-back - something not many English players can do

In Burn's defence, he thought his chances of playing for Newcastle were gone before his £13 million move in January 2022, so you never know.

Look at former Newcastle striker Joselu who made his international debut for Spain at 32.

It would be a crazy story, that's for sure, but he's one of about three English players who can play left-back so it's him, Luke Shaw or Lewis Hall isn't it? Dan Burn for England!
