Newcastle United fans have endured an extremely frustrating summer when it comes to the transfer market.

Not only has the club done very little meaningful business, but the big business the club has done has been selling two of the brightest prospects at the club, all the while, most of the stories surrounding Newcastle have been about big stars leaving.

Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all been constant targets of the press as they have been linked with moves away.

It really does feel like the mainstream media, or indeed any southern-based media, believes that Newcastle aren't allowed to have any top-class players and that those who do come here are only doing so to further their careers.

Simon Jordan practically said Isak is "too good" for Newcastle

That may well have been the case once upon a time, but since the PIF-backed takeover, that's absolutely not who we are anymore, but it is taking the media a long time to catch up to that fact - although PSR is making sure that their stories still carry some weight.

Now our good friend Simon Jordan has weighed in on TalkSPORT saying he's shocked we've retained the services of Alexander Isak when talking about Bruno Guimaraes being made captain.

“I’m surprised that Isak is still there, because I think he has the potential to be a really, really top player.

“That’s not suggesting that people should just be able to poach Newcastle’s players, but I’m more surprised with that [than Guimaraes being named captain].”

How can Newcastle compete if we keep selling our top players?

We'll give credit where it's due, Jordan did hint that he's not of the belief that Newcastle are a stepping-stone club, but his comment does suggest that he believes Isak is "too good" for Newcastle.

Newcastle are (now) an ambitious club with sights set on being regulars in the top four - how are they supposed to do that if they keep selling their best players?

Yes there will come a time when Bruno and Isak are moved on, but they came for the project and will stay to see it through unless an offer too good to turn down comes in - but it would have to be a spectacular offer for us to let either of those two players go.
