'If we are lucky enough': Alan Shearer has a theory about the celebrations should Newcastle United win another trophy

Newcastle United didn't have the longest trophy drought in English football, but it was perhaps the most talked about. It had been 56 years since the club last lifted a major honour and a whopping 70 years since the Magpies last hoisted a domestic honour.

Commentators would break their backs to mention that stat at the start of every televised cup game involving Newcastle, and while there are other top-flight clubs with longer droughts, some who have never won a trophy in their history, Newcastle's lack of silverware was infamous.

Having been so prolific back when everything was black and white to suddenly being more afraid of silver than vampires, it was amazing to see that decades-long streak come to an end on March 16th at Wembley.

Jealous fans of rival clubs will try and say it's "only" the Carabao Cup, but we'd like to see their reaction if their club wins it. I bet it wouldn't "only" be the League Cup then.

Alan Shearer can't see anything topping Saturday's celebrations

The League Cup win wasn't just about the silverware, it was about getting that monkey off the club's back. Now we have opened the floodgates, we can kick on and win again.

However, if we do, Alan Shearer told Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on The Rest Is Football podcast that he doesn't believe any future celebrations could top this one.

“What I would say is that if Newcastle are lucky enough to go on and win other trophies, you know like Chelsea did or Man City did, if they go on, I cannot see it being as good as this one has been, you know, because just of all the excitement and how long it’s been and everything else and the parade and I mean everything, the match, the parade and everything, I just cannot see, if we are lucky enough to win another one, it being as good as this one.”

Wait until we win the Premier League, Alan

Shearer actually said something similar on Saturday when addressing the gathered masses from the stage on the Town Moor.

I'm not sure I agree. As amazing as it was to finally see the club lift a trophy, surely if we were to win the Premier League or even the Champions League, the party would be even bigger.

It has been so long since Newcastle could declare themselves, factually, the best side in England. That day is coming and it is going to be immense.

I really don't want to see our fanbase become entitled and get so used to winning things that we don't appreciate it when we do. Every trophy is worth a huge celebration, even if it's the fifth time you've won it. You never know when those days or domination will end and they will end. Look at Manchester United!
