Newcastle United fan and former Sunderland and Liverpool player Don Hutchison has been speaking about a potential signing he believes Eddie Howe should make this summer.

Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe have been identifying transfer targets for a while, with the club given the green light to spend this summer as the squad is in desperate need of bulking up.

There will be players expected to leave too which does add an extra layer of complexity as it's hard to beef up the squad when you're also letting players leave.

However, particularly in the goalkeeper department, there is scope for plenty of movement as the Magpies have five goalkeepers in the first-team squad as things stand.

Caoimhin Kelleher could be No 1 at Newcastle

Caoimhin Kelleher could soon be relegated to Liverpool's third-choice 'keeper

It's expected that at least two of the current crop of 'keepers will leave, possibly three, and the Magpies have their eye on Burnley's James Trafford as one to come in and succeed Nick Pope.

However, there is likely to be another prominent option on the table with Liverpool set to complete the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili to compete with Allison, leaving Caoimhin Kelleher out in the cold.

Kelleher has proved this season that he's far too good to be an understudy and definitely too good to be a third-choice option.

Don Hutchison says Caoimhin Kelleher would be Newcastle's No 1

This is why Don Hutchison has said he'd take him at Newcastle, telling Golden Panda (via The Mag) that he'd be Newcastle's number one.

“I think Kelleher will go, to be honest. Alisson will be Liverpool’s number one and Mamardashvili will be the number two.

“It would be really unfair to ask Kelleher to stay, because how do you expect a lad that is so good to be their number three?

“It would be totally unfair and I think he deserves to be number one somewhere. I think he goes to Bournemouth and he’s their number one.

“I think he can go to the majority of the teams in the Premier League. I mean, I understand that transfer would never happen, but he’s better than what Manchester United have. But I think he’s such a talented goalkeeper.

“I’d take him at Newcastle, he’d be number one there too.”

We'd definitely take him at Newcastle, but we are leaning more towards James Trafford after his numbers this season and the fact that he's a good five years younger than Kelleher.
