Paul Merson foresees a tight game for Newcastle United as they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Midlands on Saturday.

The Magpies must shake off the disappointment of Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund as attentions turn back to the Premier League this weekend.

Eddie Howe takes his men to Molineux to face Wolves who come into this game off the back of a win against Bournemouth and in generally decent form.

Newcastle will want to continue their PL goalscoring run

Despite the midweek blip, the Magpies are looking strong in the Premier League and will be hoping to pick up where they left off against Crystal Palace after bagging four goals.

Writing for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has backed a Newcastle win but he doesn't think it's going to be easy.

"Wolves are a decent team and have had some good results this season, but I'm just going to pick Newcastle to win this one despite their result in midweek. I was actually shocked by their defeat to Borussia Dortmund, I thought they'd blow the Bundesliga side out of the water.

If Newcastle progress to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and manage to sneak into the Premier League top four, I think that'll count as a good season for them.

Prediction: Wolves 1-2 Newcastle."

Could we add a cup run to that, please Merse?

We can't disagree with what Merson said about it being a good season if we get to the Champions League knock-out stages and into the top four being a good season.

Indeed, if we can find ourselves back in the Champions League next year then we can't really complain.

If we're being honest we'd maybe add a good domestic cup run into that mix too, but we're probably being greedy on that front, especially with injuries taking hold at the moment.
