'I see him as a nine': Eddie Howe confirms Nick Woltemade's positioni at Newcastle United after fan observations
Newcastle United supporters were waxing lyrical about Nick Woltemade on Wednesday night after the German came off the bench against Bradford City.
During Newcastle's 4-1 win over Bradford City on Wednesday night, Newcastle played some superb attacking football, ultimately taking 27 shots of which 11 were on target.
While record signing Nick Woltemade started on the bench in a game which could have seen him add to his goals tally, he did get plenty of time to impress the onlooking Toon Army.
However, it wasn't his goal-scoring prowess which impressed, but his ability to hold up the ball and link up with the players around him.
Eddie Howe doesn't see Nick Woltemade as a Number 10
This led fans to wonder if Woltemade would be better playing in the number 10 role with Yoane Wissa responsible for banging in the goals.
However, Eddie Howe isn't convinced as he set the record straight in his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.
"It is difficult to see him as a 10; we don't play that position. I see him as a nine. You can't compare him to Callum Wilson; he was a different type of player. It is a case of understanding him and where he wants the ball."
When Newcastle crack the formula, they're going to take off
There will be an adjustment period while the team gets used to having Woltemade up front, as Howe said, he's not like anyone we've had before.
We're sure that it will all click at some point soon, and Woltemade, as well as the rest of the side, will start scoring more freely as they adapt to each other's style of play.
It almost feels like we're at that sleeping giant phase once again, but when we wake up, we're going to be a force to be reckoned with.
