We are going to be breaking down every reason to watch the first round of group games in Euro 2024 from a Newcastle United perspective covering players who play, have played or have been linked to Newcastle.

There will be a few tenuous links as we cover some games, but we will justify every selection.

Obviously, once the first round of fixtures is done there's no real point in doing more as every Nation will have been covered at least once.

Saturday's games get underway with a low-scoring game from a Newcastle perspective but it is one that contains a current squad member.

Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was hotly pursued by Newcastle last year

The 2pm kick-off today is Hungary v Switzerland and you shouldn't need reminding of who is likely to be involved in this one, but just in case you do, here we go.

First up, Hungary. There's just one real link to the Magpies here and it's the player we were linked with relentlessly last year before he turned us down and signed for Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai. The 23-year-old midfielder was right at the top of Newcastle's wanted list last summer to the point where I learned how to spell his name without having to look it up because I'd typed it that many times. Unfortunately, Jurgen Klopp beat us to the punch and the Hungarian had a decent first season at Anfield making 33 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and assisting two.

Fabian Schar will likely be on the bench for Switzerland

Fabian Schar is the first current Newcastle squad member in action at Euro 2024 and the only real connection to Switzerland of note.

The 32-year-old was almost ever-present for Eddie Howe last season as the Toonminator shook off injury after injury to keep on playing before his luck ran out at the end of the season.

We're not expecting Schar to start for Switzerland but hopefully, he'll get some minutes this afternoon.
