Huge update as key player set to miss Champions League clash between Marseille and Newcastle
After Newcastle United have dealt with the small matter of Manchester City on Saturday, they are due to face Marseille in the Champions League in midweek.
So far, Newcastle have travelled well in the Champions League, and they'll be hoping to add to their impressive win over Union Saint-Gilloise by beating French side Marseille next week.
The Magpies have received a boost to their chances after French outlet L'Equipe has published an update on a key member of Robert De Zerbi's squad.
Former West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd is suffering from a groin injury and is almost certain to miss the clash with Newcastle.
Olympique Marseille have confirmed the injury to Nayef Aguerd ahead of the Newcastle clash
A statement from Marseille's official site on Aguerd's injury has since confirmed the issue, saying:
"Onset of pubalgia. Specific treatment has been implemented to limit symptoms and support a gradual return to play. Regular communication is taking place with the medical staff of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation."
Aguerd has been almost ever-present for De Zerbi this season, and this will be a big blow to the French club.
Nayef Aguerd could be a big miss for Marseille
We know how much of a nuisance Aguerd can be from the times he has faced Newcastle for West Ham. Indeed, he was so solid that he was even linked with a move to St James' Park before heading to France.
There's still plenty of time between now and then, so we don't want to get too carried away, as we may lose players ourselves, but this is certainly a boost to Newcastle's chances.
Newcastle fans travelling to Marseille next week are reminded to follow the club's advice on travel and movement when in France.
