One thing that Eddie Howe clearly regrets during his time at Newcastle United is having to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest last year.

Newcastle were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last summer in a bid to raise around £70 million to plug a gap in the PSR reporting figures.

Nobody at the club wanted to let either player leave, but circumstances didn't allow for an alternative, and Newcastle have been made to rue the day ever since, particularly when it comes to local lad Anderson.

Eddie Howe has often spoken of how he didn't want Anderson to leave and has even hinted that he'd welcome him back to the club with open arms one day, sparking a lot of speculation in the media that Newcastle are plotting a raid to bring the England star back to Tyneside.

A January move is not in the cards for Elliot Anderson

Nottingham Forest won't entertain bids for Elliot Anderson in January

Newcastle weren't in a position to insert a buy-back clause into Anderson's deal, so any move to bring him home is likely to be a costly one, and The Northern Echo have shared Nottingham Forest's stance on an Anderson departure.

They believe that the East Midlands club will resist any and all offers in January, and given how hard it is to do deals in the winter window, they're unlikely to have to fight too hard on that front.

Forest will also demand upwards of £100 million for Anderson should any club come knocking in the summer, which once again puts Newcastle's dreams of bringing him back in a precarious position.

We still aren't buying the Elliot Anderson returns to Newcastle story

Other clubs will be looking at Anderson with Manchester United thought to be very interested, and while we imagine if it came down purely to choice, we expect Anderson would come home, the fact is Newcastle aren't likely to have to financial muscle to barge the likes of Man United out of the way should a deal be on the table.

Nottingham Forest started the season horribly, which gave some hope that they might look to cash in if they found themselves in a precarious position, but they've since turned a corner and they look to have got their season on track.

Only if they somehow managed to get relegated do we feel that Anderson would move in the summer, especially for anything under £100 million. Time will tell, but for now, we don't see an immediate return to the Toon for Anderson.
