In December 2019, at the lowest point of Mike Ashley's draining 14-year ownership, Newcastle United infamously gave away 10,000 half-season tickets. Today, following the £305 million takeover by a consortium comprising the Public Investment Fund (PIF), RB Sports & Media, and PCP Capital Partners, supporters are finding it difficult to see the team play at St. James' Park due to high ticket demand.

In June of last year, the club released an additional 1,000 season tickets to "supporters with a previous purchase history." These tickets sold out almost instantly, with more than 30,000 supporters joining a digital queue to purchase them, and the vast majority left empty-handed.

How many season ticket holders do Newcastle have?

As of June 2023, it's estimated that Newcastle United has 31,000 season ticket holders. This figure includes the 1,000 additional tickets from June 2022 and the 30,000 the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust (NUST) was told the club had back in 2020.

St. James' Park, with a seating capacity of 52,305, reserves up to 3,000 seats for away supporters in Premier League fixtures. This implies that approximately 63% of the home crowd at a Premier League match consists of season ticket holders.

When do Newcastle season tickets go on sale?

They don't go on sale at all these days, unfortunately. Having released an additional 1,000 season tickets for sale ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season, no new season tickets have been put on sale ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and it does not look like any will be as we write this in mid-July.

Season tickets used to go on sale when the renewal period was complete, which would typically be at some point in July. Renewal rates are at almost 100% these days, though, and the club is seemingly reluctant to add any new season ticket holders to St. James' Park before any progress has been made on the redevelopment of the stadium.

For the 2023/24 season, the price range for Newcastle season tickets is £438 to £1,108 for adults, £357 to £895 for students/senior citizens, and £86 to £508 for under-18s.

The most affordable seats are located in the "Family Area" on level seven of the Milburn and Leazes stands, while the priciest seats are in the "Platinum Club" lower down in the Milburn stand.

Following a four-year price freeze from the 2019/20 to the 2022/23 seasons, ticket prices have risen for the 2023/24 campaign.

Adults face a 5% increase, regardless of whether the season ticket is classified as "Standard Seating" or "Premium Seating". This increase mirrors the one between the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons when the club was under the ownership of Mike Ashley and the management of Steve Bruce.

How to get loyalty points at NUFC?

"Loyalty points" are awarded to supporters who purchase away tickets for Newcastle United matches in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League. A supporter is given one loyalty point per away match ticket purchased via their supporter ID, though it is almost impossible for supporters with a lower number of points, or zero points, to get any more/any at all.

In the 2022/23 season, the lowest number of loyalty points required to get an away ticket was 10 for the League Cup second-round tie at Tranmere Rovers. The lowest number of points needed for an away Premier League game was 15 for the trip to Brighton, which was heavily impacted by train strikes, and then 20 each for Wolves and Liverpool.

In the 2023/24 pre-season, there was at least a chance for people with one or more loyalty points to get another, with the Rangers friendly at Ibrox selling out at 1+ points. That's likely to be the lowest the points tally will drop this campaign, though, unless we are given an away draw in one of the cup competitions to a club with a small home following and a decent-sized stadium.
