Antonio Cordero was Newcastle United's first summer signing. The 18-year-old joined the Magpies from Malaga after turning down moves to Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Signing Cordero felt like a huge coup for Newcastle and gave fans hope that the club now had pulling power after seeing a young Spanish player refuse a move to the two biggest clubs in his home country to join Newcastle instead.

Obviously, the market has proved the exact opposite this summer since then, with Newcastle unable to secure moves for several players.

The plan for 'Antonito' was always to send the youngster out on loan, with a return to Malaga mooted during negotiations, but that has not come to pass.

Antonio Cordero looks set to move to Belgium

Newcastle World have now reported that Ajax had their eye on Cordero, which would have been a brilliant move, sending him to the club with one of the best academies in the world, to play in a team that will be in the Champions League.

However, it looks like Cordero is instead heading to European giants KVC Westerlo (no, us neither). The Belgian Pro League side finished ninth in the Belgian top flight last season and reports from Belgium are claiming that the move will be finalised this week, with The Athletic also claiming that a medical has taken place.

Is anyone else getting Garang Kuol to FC Volendam vibes here?

We just don't get it

Is sending a youngster to play in the Belgian Pro League really going to give him the experience he needs to break through into the Newcastle first team?

If Ajax was on the table, how did we end up with Westerlo? Hopefully, the reports are just wishful thinking from the Belgian media and we find a higher level for Cordero to play at next season.

Or am I just letting the negativity around the club colour my opinion of this move?
