'Here we go': Newcastle United's £55m Anthony Elanga bid accepted and medical booked in next 48 hours
On Monday night, news broke that Nottingham Forest had accepted Newcastle United's £55 million bid for Anthony Elanga.
Earlier that day, it was being reported that there were a few kinks that needed to be ironed out, with agents being blamed for the holdup.
Then, at around 9 pm last night, it was reported that a breakthrough had been made.
Fabrizio Romano gave the deal a 'here we go', which is always a good sign that a deal is being done, while another reliable source, David Ornstein, confirmed it before it then appeared on Sky Sports News.
Anthony Elanga is expected to sign a five-year deal at Newcastle
Anthony Elanga is on extended leave after representing Sweden last month and is thought to be in Portugal; however, he is now due on Tyneside for a medical ahead of his move.
Elanga will become Newcastle's first signing for the starting XI in two years when the deal is complete and will also be Newcastle's third most expensive signing, behind Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak.
David Ornstein says the deal is worth £52 million plus add-ons and that the 23-year-old is expected to sign a five-year deal with a medical due within 48 hours.
Anthony Elanga will now get a full pre-season with Newcastle
This is hugely positive news for Newcastle United as, not only are they making a breakthrough in the transfer market, but they're addressing a big problem area in the squad.
Eddie Howe will be pleased, too, as the deal was done early enough that Elanga will get the full summer to train with his new teammates, given that he wasn't due back to training until next week anyway.
Hopefully, this will start a snowball effect, and we'll soon see more additions coming into the club, starting with James Trafford.
