Two summers ago, Newcastle United were heavily linked with a move for outstanding Spanish youngster Gabri Veiga, who was playing for Celta Vigo at the time.

Veiga's impressive performances for Celta caught the eye of several big clubs around Europe, and for a while Newcastle were favourites to land the youngster.

However, in a strange move, the attacking midfielder opted to ignore all the interest from Europe and follow the money to Saudi Arabia, signing for Al-Ahli.

While many high-profile players were heading to Saudi Arabia at the time, most of them were players in the twilight of their careers, not at the start of what was expected to be a very promising one.

Gabri Veiga is heading back to Europe to sign for FC Porto

While Veiga has performed well enough in the Saudi Pro League, it's difficult to judge in real terms whether he's living up to his potential, given the overall quality of the league.

However, Fabrizio Romano has today revealed that a deal has been struck for Gabri Veiga to return to Europe with a move to FC Porto nearing completion.

"Gabri Veiga to FC Porto, here we go! Deal in place for initial transfer fee around €15m plus add-ons.

"Agreement done on both player and club side with Al Ahli as Veiga returns in Europe.

"Medical tests booked, president Villas-Boas closed the deal and it’s now done."

It might be worth keeping an eye on Gabri Veiga's progress at Porto

Newcastle were recently mentioned as an interested party in Gabri Veiga once again as the 23-year-old sought a return to Europe, but it seems that the Magpies had other plans in mind.

Veiga was one of those transfers a couple of years ago that I was really hoping would come off for Newcastle, and I was astonished when he went to Al-Ahli, but since he did that, my interest waned.

I was shocked to see his name mentioned alongside Newcastle's again this summer, but I'm certainly not surprised that we weren't the ones to bring him back to Europe. However, it may be worth keeping an eye on him to see how he does at Porto.
