Newcastle United look to finally have their man after a lengthy battle to sign striker Yoane Wissa from Brentford.

Just as I'd finished writing up a piece about a 'renewed hope' that Newcastle and Brentford could reach an agreement, Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano posted on X that an agreement has finally been reached and Yoane Wissa will sign for Newcastle United.

Craig Hope had posted on X and on the Daily Mail transfer blog that the two clubs had been in talks over a deal, and there was a belief that the deal could get done.

Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a £55 million fee has been verbally agreed, while Jacobs has claimed that Wissa will sign a four-year contract on Tyneside.

A four-year deal for Yoane Wissa is a good move by Newcastle

A four-year contract for a player who turns 29 next week is really good business, especially as Brentford have pushed the fee up to £55 million.

That allows Newcastle to spread that fee out over the four-year period for PSR.

It was inevitable that Newcastle were going to have to overpay for Wissa. Brentford didn't want him to leave, and as the window of opportunity narrowed, combined with the knowledge that Newcastle were about to receive £130 million for the sale of Alexander Isak, we were never going to grab a bargain.

Yoane Wissa will need to shake off some rust but should be ready to go

Yoane Wissa will be missing a bit of match sharpness, but having a Premier League-proven goalscorer in to help as Nick Woltemade adapts to the new league is just what we needed.

Eddie Howe now has all the pieces in place that he wanted at the start of the summer, but we've got a feeling we're not done yet.

Another midfielder could still arrive today, with Barcelona's Fermin Lopez heavily linked with a move to Tyneside. Although that may be a long shot.
