Anthony Gordon had a sublime season at Newcastle United which has resulted in the winger being a part of Gareth Southgate's England squad at Euro 2024.

Even though England were crying out for some pace down the left in the game, Gordon didn't get any time on the pitch during the 1-0 win over Serbia in the opening game.

In our little NUFC echo chamber online there were plenty of people who couldn't understand why Phil Foden, who was largely ineffective down the left, was kept on the pitch when Anthony Gordon was on the bench.

Hopefully, that's something Southgate will assess ahead of the game against Denmark on Thursday.

Anthony Gordon would love Marc Guehi at Newcastle

Despite not playing, Gordon was interviewed by TalkSPORT and he was asked about Newcastle-linked defender and England teammate Marc Guehi who had a solid game in the England defence.

“He is top. He’s such a good player. I was glad the nation got to see him shine on that stage because he is such a lovely guy and he deserves what is coming to him.

“I thought he was unbelievable in that game, considering his height compared to the strikers they had on. He won every header, he was aggressive, intercepting loads, and his main strength is his composure on the ball, he’s like a midfielder, so him and Stones at the back is a great partnership.

“I haven’t seen the Newcastle links but it goes without saying I would love him to come, as I think he’s a top, top player and he would make us a better team.”

Marc Guehi would cost around £50million this summer

It's believed that it would take a bid of around £50million to take Guehi away from Crystal Palace with Arsenal also keen on the 23-year-old.

That probably puts him out of Newcastle's reach this summer. While Newcastle are looking for at least one more central defender to join the ranks, we can't see Eddie Howe spending £50million of his precious budget on a centre-back when there a right-winger and a striker are also needed.

The best-case scenario for Newcastle - other than somehow being able to afford to buy Guehi now - would be for him to stay at Crystal Palace for another season and we pick him up next summer.
