Former England boss Glenn Hoddle has shown why he is former and not current England boss with recent comments about Gareth Southgate's squad selection.

Gareth Southgate actually made some big calls in his final squad selection for the European Championships that gets underway tonight in Germany.

Leaving our the likes of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford were huge calls by the boss - if only he was so adventurous with his team instructions.

Taking one of their spots in the final squad was Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon who only has three England caps, but is coming off the back of an outstanding season.

Hoddle would have taken Marcus Rashford to Germany

Glenn Hoddle would have taken Rashford over Gordon

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has been way off what's expected of him scoring just seven goals and laying on three assists in 33 Premier League appearances for Manchester United.

However, Hoddle doesn't see his poor form as a justification to leave him behind, telling the In The Zone podcast (as relayed by Manchester Evening News) he would have still taken the 26-year-old.

"I would have taken Marcus Rashford because I think he performs better for England than he does for Man United, and I think we need a bit of pace. They've got Anthony Gordon, who does have that pace but he doesn’t have experience."

There's a flaw in Hoddle's logic

Glenn, me old China, how is he supposed to get that experience if you don't take him to the tournament?

Gordon has out-performed Rashford all season, he has earned the right to go and while I agree that Rashford is better for England than he is for Manchester United, lemon curd is nicer on toast than dog poo, but I'd still rather go without than have either.

We're sure if Anthony Gordon is given his chance at the Euro's, Glenn Hoddle will be eating his words in a few weeks.
