Saturday saw Newcastle city centre turned black and white as Newcastle United paraded the Carabao Cup through the city with the streets lined with an estimated 300,000 Geordies before coming to a stop at the Town Moor where another 150,000 fans were waiting to see their heroes.

It was a special day for the city having been starved of success for so long, but the main takeaway from the day when speaking to the players and the manager and even the hosts is that nobody was prepared for just how big the celebration was.

Fans were on rooftops, bus stops, hanging off lampposts and sitting atop street signs. Anything they could do to get a better vantage point to see Eddie Howe and his team pass by.

Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy told reporters that the city is going to have to get used to scenes like that.

Jacob Murphy believes there's more to come from Newcastle

Newcastle fans are hoping that this trophy win will be the springboard for further success and Jacob Murphy, speaking to The Northern Echo, definitely feels confident of that.

“From being a little boy, that's more what you envision it like. But driving through there, I didn't expect it to be quite as spectacular as it was,” the winger said.

“I think the Newcastle fans, the council, everyone's probably going to have to get used to this.

“We always knew that the specialness was in being the first and to be on that bus, knowing that we were the first in so long to do it, makes it even more special.

“We spoke about it so much – being the first. Now that the club's on this trajectory, I think titles, accomplishments like this will be happening more frequently. But to be the first, I think it makes it even more special.

“Especially for seven decades of nothing, being the first, that's the important one.”

Jacob Murphy has truly earned that moment

You'd never know from his accent, but Murphy is a boyhood Newcastle fan so, like Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Lewis Hall, it means that little bit more to him.

When you consider that Murphy had been pretty much written off by fans, too, the fact he gets to lift a trophy with Newcastle is extra special, and when you add to that the fact that his assist led to the winning goal, it's the stuff dreams are made of.

Murphy is on that list of players who have truly earned that trophy, along with the other players who were here before Eddie Howe and have improved so much in the years since his arrival.
