German FA make worrying announcement as Nick Woltemade fails to link up with national squad
Fresh off the back of scoring his third goal in as many St James' Park appearances on Sunday, Nick Woltemade was due to fly out to link up with the German national squad.
Julian Nagelsmann had called up Newcastle United's 6'6" striker to the senior squad once again, but an announcement from the German FA on Monday has cast doubt on the big man's involvement in the upcoming games against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.
It appears that Woltemade has come down with the sickness (ooh ah ah ah ah) and hasn't flown out to join his compatriots.
Newcastle will, of course, be keeping an eye on the situation, but with it being an illness rather than an injury, there shouldn't be too much cause for concern.
Nick Woltemade has been struck down with man flu
After cementing his place in Newcastle history alongside Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand, we're sure Woltemade is itching to get that first senior goal for his country.
A statement issued by the German FA said: “Nick Woltemade will not be travelling today due to a flu infection.” (h/t The Northern Echo)
It sounds as though the German FA are confident that Woltemade could shake off the illness in time to join up with his teammates at some point during the break.
We may be selfish, but we wouldn't mind Nick Woltemade missing the next two games for Germany
Without wanting to sound too selfish here, we don't really care whether or not Woltemade makes it to represent Germany during the break; we only care that he is fit and ready to take on Brighton a week on Saturday.
Obviously, we'd love for Woltemade to score for his country and get the ball rolling on his senior international career, but with such important games coming up and still no Yoane Wissa for backup, we'd rather he just stayed at home with a nice cup of tea and a good book and got better.
Flu is nasty, Nick. You don't want to risk it, mate. We'll send you some soup, you just take your time and get well.
