Newcastle United appear to be edging ever closer to making that breakthrough in their pursuit of a new striker after weeks of disappointment.

Having watched several top attacking targets move elsewhere, Newcastle could finally be about to bring in the centre-forward they so desperately needed.

Although they may have to dip back into the market for another one, the way things are looking with Alexander Isak.

Right now, though, the priority is replacing Callum Wilson, the player who has actually left the club, and the Magpies are getting nearer to a deal for Brentford's Yoane Wissa to do just that.

Keith Downie sounds confident of a Yoane Wissa breakthrough

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has taken to X this afternoon to suggest that the Yoane Wissa deal is close, which is excellent news for Newcastle, given that their only first-team striker out in Asia right now is Will Osula.

🚨 Further talks are happening today at Brentford over the future of Yoane Wissa.
💸 Newcastle have had a £25m bid turned down but are in discussions over a £35m package.
🔜 The player wants to leave and is currently training on his own in London.
I’m told his move to #NUFC is moving towards a conclusion.
🇨🇩 🇸🇪 Newcastle want him to be an option to Alexander Isak for the coming season.

Remember when Newcastle were linked with Endrick?

£35 million seems like the right kind of outlay for Wissa, who we really hope is coming in as the replacement for Wilson and not Isak.

If Isak is to go this summer, the money we get for him should fund a move for Benjamin Sesko, or who knows, maybe even Endrick, after we were reportedly linked with him earlier in the window by some bored journo writing a story on a dare.

Wissa's arrival will give Eddie Howe a new option up front with a different style to the likes of Isak and Osula. Hopefully, we can get this one over the line quickly and get him out to Asia with the rest of the lads to maximise his time bedding into the squad.

Here's hoping for a positive update at some point in the next 24 hours.
