Newcastle United could be about to make a breakthrough in the transfer market and add a meaningful first-team addition for the first time in three windows.

While Will Osula and Lloyd Kelly were both signed for the first-team last summer, and of course Lewis Hall's move from Chelsea was made official in the same window, none of those deals improved the first team. Will Osula rode the bench all season, Lloyd Kelly was shipped out to Juventus in January and Lewis Hall was already at the club on loan.

We've had one mini-transfer window this summer already which Newcastle let pass them by, and the summer window has now been open for 10 days and the Magpies have made one bid which was rejected - that we know of.

However, Fabrizio Romano has issued a positive update this afternoon which suggests that Newcastle's transfer deadlock could be about to be broken.

Fabrizio Romano claims terms have been agreed between Newcastle and James Trafford

Now that Burnley have signed a replacement for James Trafford, Romano claimed that talks between Newcastle and the Clarets would kick on to get a deal done for the 22-year-old stopper. Just a couple of hours after that update, Romano said that everything has been agreed between Newcastle and Trafford and it's all down to the clubs now.

"🚨⚪️⚫️ James Trafford has fully agreed personal terms with Newcastle and talks between clubs keep advancing.

"No agreement yet on fee with Burnley but expectation remains to get it done in the next days. #NUFC confident as reported."

Newcastle could have James Trafford through the door next week

Eddie Howe wants new faces in before the squad returns to training a week on Monday, while Luke Edwards has claimed that the club are working to a 'soft deadline' to get at least one deal done before the end of next week.

James Trafford has always felt like the easiest one to get done this summer, and if the two clubs can come to a compromise on price, it shouldn't take long to get this one over the line.

We may be asking a bit too much to expect Newcastle to have two players in before they return to training, but with talks ongoing for Joao Pedro and Anthony Elanga it's not impossible.
