Newcastle United fans might want to brace themselves for a lot of speculation around Eddie Howe's future as on the basis of that England performance it's unlikely Lee Carsley will be handed the job on a permanent basis.

Carsley opted to go with no striker at the start of tonight's game against Greece, channeling his inner Eddie Howe, albeit the big difference is that Carsley had options with Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke left on the bench.

Two Newcastle players started the match with one more on the bench but only one was still on the pitch at full time.

Odysseas Vlachodimos was between the sticks for Greece and the fourth-choice Newcastle 'keeper had a decent game even if it was quite quiet for the 30-year-old.

Anthony Gordon got an hour run out for England

Anthony Gordon started on the left for England and looked lively, but was guilty of giving the ball away on several occasions before he was replaced by Noni Madueke in the second half.

Greece actually had the ball in the England net five times during the game but the officials ruled out three of those efforts, however, two was all they needed to grab their first ever victory over England.

Jordan Pickford almost handed them an early lead by pissing about with the ball at his feet well out of his box but Levi Colwill was awake enough to get back to clear the Greek shot off the line. That was just a sign of things to come from the England defence however, who let Greece do as they pleased time and time again and were rightly punished for their lax approach.

Odysseas Vlachodimos looked solid for Greece

Jude Bellingham was the man to breach Vlachodimos' goal late in the game to draw England level, and while at first it looked like a classic case of crisp packets for hands, replays showed how late Ody saw the ball and the fact that he got anything on it at all was quite impressive.

Vlachodimos may have given Eddie Howe something to think about tonight, although, as we said, it's not like he was very busy especially given that Bellingham's goal was only England's second shot on target.

Once again Tino Livramento watched on from the bench, but as he was only called up yesterday we weren't really expecting him to play any part tonight.

England face Finland in Reykjavik on Sunday and seeing as Carsley is all about the experiments, he might as well play Tino from the start.
