Former Premier League referee gives his view on Newcastle United penalty appeals against PSV
Newcastle United's 3-0 win over PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday night created such a buzz that it was easy to forget that the Magpies were potentially robbed of a penalty.
Yoane Wissa caused the PSV back line no end of problems from the first whistle last night, as it was his pressing that forced the error for Anthony Gordon's goal, Newcastle's second.
That was after the DR Congo striker had already got his name on the scoresheet after opening the scoring on eight minutes.
However, the 29-year-old had every right to feel aggrieved that he wasn't awarded a penalty in the second half after a blatant push when going up for a header.
Keith Hackett says the referee got this one wrong
Wissa was leaping to get on the end of a perfectly floated cross, and just as he was about to make contact, Jerdy Schouten barged into the side of the striker, sending him head over heels, but the referee was unmoved.
Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett looked at the incident for Football Insider, and his view is that the referee (who looked out of his depth all night) got it wrong.
“There was a clear push on the Newcastle United player that impacted on his ability to challenge for the ball.
“This was a foul by the PSV player, and Newcastle Utd can feel aggrieved that they were not awarded a penalty kick.”
If it comes down to goal difference next week, this will be remembered
In the grand scheme of things, it's a moot point, but that extra goal that could have resulted from the spot kick would have seen the Magpies go above next week's opponents in the table.
It would just be on goal difference, sure, but that's what it might all come down to next week.
But, we'll take the win, the clean sheet and the entire forward line scoring. That's what counts. Onwards to Paris!
