Former Newcastle United star announces retirement from football just months after being linked with return to Tyneside
It wasn't that long ago that Newcastle United were being reported as looking to sign long-since departed players who came up through the academy to fill out their 'club-grown' quota for their Champions League squad.
One of the players linked with filling that role would have served a dual purpose, as Newcastle were also looking for another goalkeeper to come into the club before they brought in Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.
After joining Newcastle as a 17-year-old, Dutch-born Tim Krul would have counted as a club-grown player after coming through the ranks before going on to have a successful run as Newcastle's Number 1.
The Dutchman made a blinding start to his Newcastle career in the UEFA Cup against Palermo, where he made some top-tier saves, announcing himself to the Toon Army.
Tim Krul left Luton Town in the summer and has now hung up his gloves
Krul is also remembered for a super display against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2013/14 season, in which he made a record 14 saves in the game to keep a clean sheet.
Tim Krul left Newcastle for a short spell at Brighton before moving to Norwich City, where he went on to make 169 appearances.
Krul's last club was Luton Town, whom he left in the summer, but now the 37-year-old has made the decision to hang up his gloves and move behind the scenes.
Tim Krul thanked everyone who helped him throughout his career
After picking up a diploma in sports directorship from the PFA, it looks like he may be heading to the boardroom. In the meantime, Krul has issued a heartfelt statement on social media announcing his retirement and thanking those who helped him along the way.
“As I hang up my gloves after 20 incredible years as a professional football player, I want to take a moment to reflect on my journey.
“From joining Newcastle as a 17-year-old boy, to representing Holland on the international stage. I have truly lived the dream I had as a young boy every match, every training session, and every rollercoaster moment has shaped me into who I am today.
“Thank you to the clubs, coaches, teammates my beautiful family, and most importantly you fans for your support throughout my career. I am excited for the next chapter and will always cherish the memories made on the pitch.
“Here's to new adventures off the pitch! Thank you, Tim Krul.”
Best of luck in whatever you do next, Tim. Thanks for the memories.
