Former Newcastle United coach guides Scotland to first World Cup in 28 years with huge win over Denmark
Former Newcastle United coach Steve Clarke has made Scotland's dreams come true in spectacular fashion as his Tartan Army beat Denmark 4-2 last night to book their place in next year's World Cup.
Scotland scored three absolutely stunning goals, with two of those being scored by one-time Newcastle United targets.
Scott McTominay opened the scoring with a sublime overhead kick just three minutes into the game, but Denmark pegged that one back from the spot on 57 minutes via Rasmus Hojlund.
Lawrence Shankland tapped home on the line from a corner on 78 minutes, but that lead lasted just four minutes as Patrick Dorgu levelled once again.
Scotland turned on the style in the second half against Denmark
Scottish heads didn't go down, though, as they knew they needed the win to secure qualification, and with Denmark down to 10 men and six minutes up on the board, the Jocks went to work.
Kieran Tierney, who was linked with Newcastle many times in the early days of the takeover, curled a stunning effort from outside the area, bending it around his club mate Kasper Schmeichel and in to send the Scotland bench into raptures.
They weren't done there, though, with 99 minutes on the clock, Scotland broke down a Denmark attack, and with Schmeichel well off his line, Kenny McLean launched an audacious effort from inside his own area which bounced into the net, sealing the win in some style.
Congratulations to Steve Clarke and Scotland
We were never keen on the idea of signing Scott McTominay, but since he's gone to Napoli, he's become prime Ronaldo all of a sudden, and that overhead kick was very not Scottish.
Huge congratulations to Scotland, it's great to see them back on the big stage, although I'm sure I'm in the minority when it comes to English people wishing them well, as they certainly wouldn't extend us the same courtesy.
Let's be honest though, it's not like they're going to get out of the group stage next year, is it?
