Newcastle United have a pretty solid record of letting players go who turn out to be absolute ballers.

We have a pretty good record of bringing in ballers and turning them into pure garbage too - Stephane Guivarc'h anyone?

Ivan Toney is probably the biggest case of letting go of a future star that Newcastle has been involved in since Alan Shearer. For whatever reason it was deemed that Toney wasn't good enough for Newcastle and he was sold to Peterborough United and eventually to Brentford.

Toney proved all the doubters wrong

Since Brentford came into the Premier League, Ivan Toney has been consistently proving Newcastle wrong. To the point where rumours continue to swirl about the Magpies correcting their mistake and buying Toney back.

Arsenal seem to be the frontrunners for Ivan Toney's signature and will likely pounce in the summer. Something Bees boss Thomas Frank is bracing himself for after telling Tipsbladet in Denmark that he expects Toney to leave this summer.

"It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer. We also know what he is worth. I don’t think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now.

“He is a really skilled striker who is in his prime football age. Personally, as a coach, I would prefer to keep Toney but one day it could be fun to see him on a top team. This winter we actually had no offers for him, but it will surprise me if there aren’t a lot of clubs that will be interested in him.”

Will the PIF cough up for Toney?

Newcastle desperately need a new striker this summer, probably two as it's looking increasingly likely that Callum Wilson will be sold at the end of this season. The Magpies have been caught short up front too many times this season to even contemplate heading into next season with just two strikers again.

Whether the club will stump up the mega millions it will likely take to sign Ivan Toney remains to be seen with so many players needed to flesh out the squad for the next campaign.

It would be fantastic if we could though. Registering a goal every two games, Toney has a strike record that's hard to beat, especially in a striker who'd be available to purchase. Also, he and Sandro Tonali could exchange tips ... sorry. I don't feel good about that one at all.
