Formal announcement of Newcastle United stadium plans could be delayed to end of season according to new report

Newcastle United fans have been waiting patiently for updates around the future of St James' Park with some form of announcement expected in "early 2025".

The club teased a first-quarter update on the stadium plans last year with fans still unsure of what the club intends to do with St James' Park.

Fans are warming to the idea of a brand new stadium, but the overwhelming consensus is that the stadium must remain in the city centre with the land at Leazes Park behind the current stadium seen as the ideal place to build.

An extension of St James' Park is still an option, as is the possibility of demolishing St James' Park and building on the existing site. Unfortunately, now it's being reported that we may have to wait even longer to find out what the plans are.

The club have seen drawings of what the new stadium could look like

Craig Hope's Newcastle Confidential column has provided a few updates on things as they stand, saying that the club has seen drawings for both a new site and a revamped St James' Park.

Expanding St James' Park would take the capacity up to around 60,300 and would involve refitting the Gallowgate end but the stadium's looks won't change too much, meanwhile, a new stadium would be built with a 70,000 capacity and early drawings are believed to have the stadium walls covered in a 'bubble wrap' design.

However, along with the good news comes the bad and that's that a formal decision may be delayed until closer to the end of the season.

Newcastle want the stadium completed for Euro 2028

The club have spoken about having a new stadium built in time for Euro 2028 which is set to take place in Great Britain and Ireland, but to do so, the stadium must be finished six months before the tournament starts.

With all the delays, Newcastle will be lucky to finish the new ground in time to hit that deadline.
