Newcastle United have made some poor signings over the years and while many of them can be looked at like the right player at the wrong time as they've gone on to be successful since leaving St James' Park, there are others who somehow got even worse.

When you look at some of the players Newcastle have had that were considered flops at the Toon but went on to bigger and better things, we've had some quality players through the door who just couldn't cut it on Tyneside.

Joselu is probably the most famous one right now after his magnificent late-career turnaround. Geordie Boot Boys unearthed a beauty today, bringing Florian Thauvin back into the spotlight.

Then we have Jeff Hendrick, the free transfer who scored an absolute stunner on his Premier League debut and might as well have hung up his boots at full time.

Jeff Hendrick is still looking for a club eight months after leaving Newcastle United

Jeff Hendrick was looked at by Wrexham but still remains without a club

The Republic of Ireland international was a desperate signing at a desperate time for the club and it didn't take Eddie Howe very long to toss him aside when he arrived.

Hendrick went out to three different clubs on loan with spells at Reading, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday before he was released from Newcastle United in the summer when his contract expired.

And now, as reported by The Shields Gazette, the 33-year-old is still without a club with the closest thing he's had to a nibble was when Wrexham looked his way to replace injured Andy Cannon.

Rob Lee's son is a huge player for Wrexham

There's still a chance that the move could happen given Hendrick's free-agent status. Perhaps he could make a difference in Wrexham's bid to secure a third successive promotion.

Hendrick wouldn't be the first player at Wrexham with a Newcastle United connection as Ben Tozer used to be the captain of the Red Dragons before he moved on to Forest Green Rovers.

Son of Newcastle legend Rob Lee, Elliot is still on the books and flying high at the Racecourse Ground. However, it does feel unlikely that Hendrick will be joining him at this point.
