One of the big promises made following the PIF-backed takeover of Newcastle United was that the club would be getting an all-new state-of-the-art training facility to bring the club in line with the top sides in Europe.

Since the takeover, though, things have been pretty quiet on that front. The current site at Darsley Park has been dramatically improved since the takeover, though, taking some of the urgency out of the need to get cracking on a new complex.

Indeed, the stadium debacle is currently at the top of the clubs' to-do list with news on that front expected in the near future.

However, The Daily Mail is now claiming that the Magpies have commissioned Populous to design and deliver the new training complex.

Newcastle's training ground plans are in good hands

Populous should be a familiar name if you've been keeping up with the stadium updates as the US-based firm was in the mix for that project too.

The firm was responsible for the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, which is absolutely stunning, and has drawn the plans for Roma’s new 65,000-capacity home. They were also the brains behind the impressive Real Madrid Sports City.

It also appears that Newcastle has narrowed it down to two sites on which to build the new complex with land near Woolsington, beside Newcastle Airport, and the land near the Reuben Family-owned Newcastle Racecourse with the latter being the more likely winner.

A new training ground is still expected to be years away

However, any actual movement on this front is likely to be a while away yet and as such, work is scheduled to continue to improve the current ground at Benton.

The Mail also goes on to say that Populous' involvement in the training ground does not mean they have won the contract for the stadium and that they expect Newcastle will use two different companies.

Hopefully, we'll find out sooner rather than later about what is happening with the stadium, as this is dragging on a bit now.
