Fabrizio Romano shares what he's hearing about Newcastle United offering new deal to Sandro Tonali
On Saturday, Newcastle United announced that Ross Wilson would be coming in as the new sporting director, finally filling the gap left by Paul Mitchell.
Immediately, speculation began to swirl over what Wilson's immediate impact at Newcastle would be, with the general consensus being that there would be plenty of contract issues for the new man to work through.
The Magpies have several players nearing the end of their current deals, and Wilson will have to assess which are worthy of extensions and negotiate those deals.
Also, there are a few stars at the club who may feel like they've earned themselves an improved deal.
Newcastle have some big players who have earned fresh terms
Tino Livramento was targeted by Manchester City in the summer, prompting reporters to suggest that the Magpies may look to improve his current contract to keep City at bay.
Sven Botman's contract expires in 2027 and there's been talk of Liverpool keeping an eye on the Dutchman, so a new deal for him makes sense.
Finally, there's Sandro Tonali, who has become indispensable since he returned from his 10-month ban, and many feel that he's earned himself better terms at the club.
There are no signs of talks immediately
However, Fabrizio Romano has told Give Me Sport that he's not aware of any immediate talks around a new contract for the Italy international.
"At the moment, I’m not aware of negotiations over new deal. Newcastle love Tonali, but at the moment it doesn’t involve new deal."
It's only a couple of days into Ross Wilson's tenure, so we can't say we're surprised by this news at all. We would be shocked if talks aren't on the agenda within the next 12 months, however.
